When can we move in?
Our plan is to move in 2023 – just 3 short years away! We are a community of intentional people willing to invest in the future. Follow our progress at the Current Status page.
Who will live at Truckee River CoHousing?
Our community is developed by local Truckee families for full-time residents. We will have some long-term rental opportunities, but no short term rentals. Consistent with our values, we are building a community where people of all ages, ethnicities, abilities, classes, genders, and sexual orientations can feel welcome and connected. How will home ownership be legally structured?
Members will own their private units and a percentage of all common property through a homeowners association (HOA.) The technical term is “air-space condominium.” Each family will be responsible for maintenance from the interior paint inward. We will share responsibility (through the HOA) for maintenance of the exterior of the homes and common spaces.
What is the size and number of bedrooms of the homes?
We are planning about 35 private homes, including townhomes and flats (condos on a single level.) The flats are 1- to 3-bedrooms and will have elevator access. The townhomes will feature 3 bedrooms and 2.5 baths on two stories, each with an internal staircase.
Are there still homes available?
Yes! At this time each type of home is available. You will select your specific home for purchase based upon the date you join our Explorer program.
Will I have my own kitchen?
Yes. Each member will have a fully-equipped private home, including full kitchens and laundry hook-ups.
Will I have my own garage?
Every household will have access to one covered garage space and one uncovered surface space. We are designing our community with automobiles on the outskirts and landscaped promenades leading to our homes, supporting in-person interactions with our neighbors.
What common amenities will we share?
We will all share a Common House for community gatherings, meals, board games, music, and more. The Common House will include a community kitchen, large dining room, two guest rooms, a playroom for kids, and a multi-purpose media room.
In addition, there will be shared spaces for bicycles, skis, workshops and gardens. You may find you’ll need fewer belongings when you can share common tools and sports equipment. We anticipate sharing snowblowers, electric bicycles, ski wax stands, and so much more!
Of course, we will all enjoy the outdoor common green and riverfront gathering spot, where we will continue our tradition of spending time together under the stars of the night sky.
How might common meals be organized?
Common meals are the glue that holds our community together. A common meal may be the only time in a busy week when there’s a chance for a real conversation with our neighbors. And if we’re lucky enough to have a little extra time for some after-dinner talk, so much the better.
We anticipate sharing a few dinners each week, but the specifics have not yet been decided. We will rotate responsibility for planning and preparing meals, taking care to accommodate food requirements and preferences.
What if I’m an introvert or don’t want to socialize on a given day?
Very few of us feel like socializing all of the time. CoHousing offers the choice of enjoying the privacy of your own home (and common areas that aren’t being used by others,) or enjoying whatever happens to be going on in the neighborhood. How much you socialize is up to you. CoHousing is actually very popular with introverts, because there is no extra effort required to socialize – neighborly interactions are built-in and happen organically.
